Ethics and Morality-15-327 (4 Semester Hours)
January 12, 1999 to April 27, 1999
Tuesdays 6:30-9:30 p.m.

Course Description:
This course is designed to acquaint the student with basic approaches to ethics and morality as well as with historical concepts and development of ethical thought. Contemporary ethical and moral issues will be examined, and the student will become familiar with the essential vocabulary utilized in ethical and moral discussions.

Course Objectives:

  1. To describe and discuss major ethical theories and various philosophical issues related to moral reasoning.
  2. To demonstrate a consistent and coherent strategy for ethical decision making.
  3. To analyze the relative influence of reason and emotion in personal ethical decision making.
  4. To describe and discuss ethical issues involved in contemporary events.
  5. To value a variety of ethical viewpoints.
  6. To demonstrate critical thinking and communication skills in the context of ethics and morality.
  7. To prepare and analyze an approved topic, through an in-depth inquiry of the topic. (Independent Study Component)

Grading:
Mid-term Exam 25%
Research Project 25%
Final Exam 50%
(Class participation can provide bonus points)

Research Project:
Each student will write a 12-page research paper. This paper will discuss a contemporary ethical issue. The topic will be approved prior beginning the project.

Plagiarism has no place in your research project. No credit will be given if plagiarism is present. Cheating on a test will also result in not receiving any credit for the exam.
