Underground Edinburgh was a building project designed to rebuild Edinburgh in 1788 by bridging the gap between Old Town and New Town. The result was lovely for the rich who lived above ground. However, the poor used the 120-vaults under the bridge construction to live and do business. The vaults had no ventilation, running water, and sewers. Underground Edinburgh contained horrible living conditions.
