The Good, the Bad, and the Ugly Times
Tomorrow is the 85th anniversary of Winston Churchill's first speech in the House of Commons as Prime Minister of Great Britain. Churchill just replaced Neville Chamberlain as the country's leader. Britain is facing Nazi Germany. It was a terrible time for Europe. The Benelux countries, France, Poland, Czechoslovakia, Hungary, and Romania were under Hitler’s control. Less than a year later, Hitler invaded Russia.
Churchill knew that the Battle of Britain would rage in the skies over England less than a month from his speech.
Churchill realized that WWII would ravage Great Britain. He knew his country would face death and agony. However, he said, “I can give them nothing but disaster for quite a long time.”
In juxtaposition to Churchill and Great Britain, we face Trump and his trade wars with the rest of the world. Name a country that Trump doesn’t have in his crosshairs, as he is hunting for money. Trump has tentatively settled the tariff issue with Great Britain. Usually, tariff deals between countries take months, even years.
Trump’s deal with Great Britain is merely a framework, as various issues still need to be worked out. However, we won’t be charging 25% on all UK imports; we have generously reduced the 25% tariff to 10% on imports.
Fortunately for me, Trump will allow the best UK cars to be imported without even a 10% tariff. I am considering buying a Rolls-Royce, Bentley, or Jaguar, with a particular interest in a new Bentley.

I’m presently driving a 2009 VW Jetta and think it is time to get a new car. The Bentley that I want will cost me $402,300. Both my Jetta and the Bentley are blue, although this Bentley has a bit of an emerald tint to the blue. Ginger, my Irish Setter, will love riding around town in my new Bentley.
When Trump became president, the Stock Market closed at 43,487.83. The Stock Market closed at 41,249.38. In four months, the Stock Market lost 2,250 points. Trump said, “This is a great time to get rich, richer than ever before!!!”
Churchill faced gloom and doom for a country that had been doing quite well. Trump took a country that was doing quite well and made it worse economically. We don’t know what America will face economically in the coming months and years. I’ll buckle up for the ride when I get my blue Bentley.
One addendum. Two men rose to power, separated by a lifetime. Each had a choice to make in life. One stood up to Hitler, and the other one admired the authoritarians. Churchill saved Britain, and Trump is ruining America. One reached out to help, while the other reached out for money and power. Had Trump read and learned anything educationally, he would have read Macbeth by Shakespeare.
Life’s but a walking shadow, a poor player
That struts and frets his hour upon the stage,
And then is heard no more. It is a tale
Told by an idiot, full of sound and fury,
Signifying nothing.
That is how Trump will be remembered. Unfortunately, he will cause many people unnecessary suffering as “he struts and frets his hour upon the stage.” Trump has never helped anyone other than himself.
